At the 34th Japan Biomagnetism and Bio-electromagnetics Society in Hakodate Dr. Masato Yumoto, M.D., Ph.D. the Director of Epilepsy Center at the University of Tokyo Hospital, gave a poster on Sigma3 SP LLC’s first noise suppression software, Denoise 1. This software was developed by Drs. Taulu and Larson at the University and Dr. Taulu states that his “team at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS) and the Department of Physics, University of Washington, works on general-purpose methodology to suppress the effect of artifact components in MEG. The most recent method includes the oversampled temporal projection (OTP or Denoise I) against sensor noise.” Dr. Taulu’s research for many years dealt only external noise which might affect magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals. Some typical artifacts may arise from external electromagnetic interference from the laboratory, traffic, subject’s movement artifacts and eye blinks, as well as internally implanted therapeutic stimulators such as DBS and VNS. But he also explains there can be sensor artifacts.

Thus, he and his team developed Denoise 1 which was tested at the Sigma3 beta site at Dr. Yumoto’s Center. His finding is applicable to clinical populations such as epilepsy, where HFO signals are thought to be important markers for areas of seizure onset and are typically difficult to detect with non-invasive neuroimaging methods.

Dr. Yumoto’s poster demonstrated the power of the Denoise 1’s capability. Now at the Epilepsy Center 400 more past anonymized MEG data. Denoise 1 has been implemented by the Minamata Hospital and the Brain Function Analysis and Imaging Laboratory Center for Information and Neural Networks (CiNet) at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), both in Japan.
